AMERICA
THE BEAUTIFUL ON UK CHARTS - A RECORD! |
| |
"America
the Beautiful" On UK Charts - A Record! The latest Elvis Presley
single may only have debuted at No. 69 on the U.K. Singles chart,"
(Now #84) but "America the Beautiful" gives Elvis Presley his
113th hit (a tally second only to Cliff Richard's 124), and
the record for the longest span of new hits. Presley first reached
the chart the week of May 11, 1956, with "Heartbreak Hotel."
With "America the Beautiful" charting for the first time, his
span of hits expands to 45 years and six months. The previous
title-holder was Frank Sinatra, who had a span of 44 years,
6 months, and 3 weeks, between his chart debut in July 1954
with "Young at Heart" and his last chart hit, "They All Laughed"
in January 1999. Allowing re-issues into the equation, Presley's
new span is beaten by two others: Bing Crosby had a span of
46 years and 1 month between his "Isle of Innesfree" on the
very first U.S./U.K. Singles chart dated November 14, 1952,
and the re-issued "White Christmas" in December 1998. Dean Martin's
span of 45 years and 11 months starts from the debut of "Kiss"
in September 1953, and ends with the re-entry of "Sway" in August
1999.

NEWS
FROM ARJAN DEELEN |
| |
The
next FTD release will contain the Midnight Show on the 24th of
August, 1974. As Elvis' shows in August '74 were very long, tapes
are generally incomplete (Only 60 minutes on the casettes). We
have selected this show because of Elvis' outstanding performance.
The tape runs out after IF YOU TALK IN YOUR SLEEP and we have
chosen to fill up the CD with the ending of the August 29 Dinner
show, mainly to feature the ultra rare EARLY MORNING RAIN and
create a sense of a complete show. For your information: There
is definitely enough material from this Las Vegas engagement to
create a "best of the rest CD" for future release. 1) See See
Rider 2) I Got A Woman/Amen 3) Love Me 4) If You Love Me 5) It's
Midnight 6) Big Boss Man 7) Fever 8) Love Me Tender 9) All Shook
Up 10) The Wonder Of You 11) I'm Leavin' 12) Softly As I Leave
You 13) Spanish Eyes 14) Hound Dog 15) You Gave A Mountain 16)
Polk Salad Annie 17) Introductions - Including speech on painting
angels. 18) If You Talk In Your Sleep. Added Material from August
29, Dinner show: 19) Early Morning Rain 20) Hawaiian Wedding Song
21) Can't Help Falling In Love |

FROM ARJAN DEELEN |

I
talked to Ernst Jørgensen today, and he told me that the Elvis
"tribute" CD single for the victims of the terrorist attack on
September 11th is now a reality. It will consist of the following
songs: "If I Can Dream" "America The Beautiful" "Amazing Grace"
The proceeds from this single will go to the Red Cross. The front
cover will be the same as the AMAZING GRACE release: a photo from
"Love Me Tender", because BMG wanted to have an unglamorous cover.
The Red Cross logo will also be on the frontcover. The CD single
should be out within a week, or two weeks at the latest. Let's
all support this wonderful initiative, and order this single now!

A
NICE SUGGESTION FROM A UK FAN |
| |
It
suddenly dawned on me after seeing a clip of people in NY singing
'The Battle Hymn of The Rupublic' that surely a charity single
would be the next logical step. Remember "Candle in The Wind"
by Elton John symbolised the mood of the U.K. after Princess
Di's death.
Let's have the symbol of the American Dream 'Elvis Presley'
singing 'An American Trilogy', 'If I Can Dream' , 'America,
The Beautiful' and 'Amazing Grace' on a 4trck CD EP with all
proceeds going to the victims famiiles!!!!!!!! THIS WOULD be
embraced by all Americans at this time and no other singing
star could or would be appropriate!!!!! If you make 'Trilogy'
the Live New York version that would also strike a chord.
Please, pass this message on to any contacts you have in the
Elvis World, Thanks for your time!
TCB;
Phil Shakespeare

THE
SEVENTH SHOW
by Gonzalo Corral San Martín |
| |
The
purpose of this article is to contribute to clear up the different
scenes of Elvis' performances in rehearsals and shows seen in
the films That's The Way It Is (TTWII) 1970, This Is Elvis, The
Lost Performances and TTWII Special Edition. The reason for this
title is because at least SEVEN shows were filmed and recorded
(and partially an eighth that I'll analyze later) during the 1970
August season at the Las Vegas International Hotel. Elvis' performances
can be seen from all of them (from the eight shows) in the TTWII
1970 original version as well as in the new Special Edition. |
